What is Native Tongues?

Native Tongues is a methodology and app for accelerated language learning. We offer a two-day immersion protocol that gets you past the most difficult part of learning a language: the beginning.

Our method is based on Dr. Stephen Krashen's Comprehensible Input theory — the idea that the best way to acquire a language is by reading and listening to content just beyond what you already understand. Dr. Krashen is the godfather of modern language acquisition and his research is considered the gold standard in the field.

The problem is that you can't learn by reading until you have enough vocabulary to actually understand something. Native Tongues helps you get over that initial learning curve as quickly as possible.

For many years I believed my brain was not wired for learning languages.

I took two years of French and Spanish in school, three months of Duolingo — I learned nothing.

Then one day I was invited to visit a reforestation project in the Amazon Rainforest. I had two days before the flight, so I locked myself in and flooded my brain with Portuguese sentences.

By the time I got on the plane, I was amazed to find that I could already read real stories. By day 10, I was communicating in broken Portuguese with Yawanawa natives, often spending the entire day talking to Vinnya, one of the local elders. Vinnya is also a teacher working to preserve the tribe's language for the younger generation before it's lost.

If this method worked for me, I knew it could work for others too. So I teamed up with linguists to turn it into something you can do in a single weekend.

Jacob in the Amazon
